Could a Dirty Flame Sensor Be the Issue?
Yes, and it’s more common than people think. The flame sensor is a safety component that prevents gas from flowing unless a flame is present. If the sensor gets dirty, it may not detect the flame correctly.
When that happens, the furnace starts, the burner ignites, and then the system shuts down almost immediately. This creates short heating cycles that appear to be classic furnace short cycling. Cleaning or replacing a dirty flame sensor is a quick fix for an experienced HVAC technician.
