Heat Pump Efficiency in Extreme Cold
As the outdoor temperature drops, the heating load of your home increases, and the heat pump has to work harder to extract heat from the outside air.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has found that cold climate models can maintain high efficiency even in subzero temperatures. While traditional heat pumps might lose efficiency around 30°F, newer models can operate at full capacity down to 5°F or lower.
Efficiency ratings like the Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF) help measure this. Even when the efficiency drops slightly in extreme cold, heat pumps often remain more energy efficient than propane or oil furnaces.
